Tools used to make Ice Sculptures
Ice sculptures are unique in that they are not made from stones or something long lasting like that. They are made from ice and are for most times used only for temporary display. A lot of it depends in the skill is the sculptor. It is not only how artistic the sculptor is, but also how quick he is. The speed is of essence here because if he takes too long the ice would melt. So while dealing with ice sculptures, you need to use the best tools for a quick sculpting job.
Here are the basic tools used to make ice sculptures:
• Chainsaw: This is a very versatile tool in ice sculpting. It is powerful so you can use it for rough cutting to give the piece its basic shape. Given the way it works, it is also a great tool to provide shape to the sculpture and to smoothen it. Depending on the design, for people with delicate hands, it is also a great detailer tool. However for smoothening and detailing there are other better tools and you need not use chainsaw.
• Handsaw: For people who cannot afford a chain saw or do not prefer it, hand saw is a great alternative. It can cut the pieces perfectly and you have better control with a hand saw than a chain saw.
• Flat Chisel: This is an excellent shaping and smoothening tool. With this chisel you can chip away at the basic shape and give it more details.
• Ice Knife: This is a very versatile shaping tool. Knifes are sharp so they can cut through the ice easily. The knife easy to handle and hence can deliver great shapes to the sculpture.
• Six prong Ice chipper: This is another great ice shaping tool. The 6 prongs give you enough leverage with the shaping. The short handle and tight grip means that you are better control of the shape with the chipper. It is also a decent tool to smoothen some edges as need be.
• Junichi Saw: This is similar to ah handsaw but is used for much finer details. The serrated edge of this saw makes it easy cutting through the ice. To use it rub it on the ice and push it towards yourself. To make better use of it, just bend it away from the hand you would typically use it. This was it will work great.
• V Shaped Chisel: This is one of the best tools for detailing. So if you have a human form, you can use this chisel to add details like the eyes, nose, ear, etc. A simple and sturdy tool to deliver the best results in detailing.
These are some of the common tools that you can use in ice sculpting. However, if you want to us the detailing tools, you need to be working in cold environment. Warmer temperatures may not give you enough time to detail and create a masterpiece. You need to work with the chain saw almost exclusively.
